City of Smyrna Memorial Day Ceremony
The City of Smyrna will be holding the Memorial Day ceremony at the 20th Century Veterans Memorial on May 30, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. The ceremony is sponsored and coordinated by the Smyrna Veterans Committee, an organization composed of the City of Smyrna, The Veterans Memorial Association of Smyrna, and American Legion Post 160. The ceremony is a public event and all are invited to attend and participate in this memorial service to honor those who have sacrificed in defense of our nation.
Seating will start at 9:00 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial (2800 King Street, Smyrna, GA 30080) and ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Smyrna Community Center (200 Village Green Circle, Smyrna, 30080).
The speakers for this year’s ceremony are U.S. Army COL (Ret.) Michael D. Steele, a Georgia native and veteran of numerous overseas deployments, and The Rev. Dr. Robert G. Certain, also a Georgian, Vietnam Veteran, and former POW.
After ceremonies are completed at 11:00 there will be an impressive array of activities for the public. Activities include numerous static displays of military hardware and public safety equipment on and around the traffic circle in front of the Community Center. A medley of patriotic music will be performed by 116th Army Band, Georgia Army National Guard, followed by a one-hour concert performed by the Tara Winds Orchestra with appropriate music selections from composers ranging from John Philip Sousa to George Gershwin to Glen Miller.
