2019 Smyrna Memorial Day Ceremony
The City of Smyrna will be holding its annual Memorial Day ceremony at the 20th Century Veterans Memorial on May 27, 2019, at 9:30 a.m. The event and adjacent parking are free and open to all.
The 2019 Smyrna Memorial Day Ceremony is organized by the Smyrna Veterans Committee and it is those members of the community who officiate. This event honors the valiant men and women of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard, both past and present. It also commemorates the 100th anniversary of both the Treaty of Versailles and the founding of the American Legion. The Treaty of Versailles formalized the end of World War I, but to many, it set the uneasy foundation of an even greater conflict starting just twenty years and three months later: World War II.
Seating will start at 8:30 a.m. and pre-ceremony/ceremony activities will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Smyrna Community Center (200 Village Green Circle, Smyrna, 30080).
Featured speakers are local historian Michael Hitt who will remember the only woman from Georgia who died as a result of World War I. Army Nurse Camille O’Brien died in France while taking care of wounded and ill Soldiers. Also, Airborne Ranger Infantry Officer Doug Wilson will discuss his experiences. He was involved in heavy combat in SE Asia and conducted several classified missions.
The event plan includes an honor guard from the 94th Airlift Wing, 3 volleys of 7 rifles in salute, echo taps, and a wreath laying ceremony. The 116th Georgia Army National Guard Band will perform before, during and after the ceremony. There will be current and vintage military vehicles and other weapons and equipment on display.
In case of inclement weather, the event will be at the Smyrna Community Center. American Legion Post 160, Smyrna Rotary Club, Jonquil City Kiwanis, Veterans Memorial Association of Smyrna, Chick-fil-A of South Cobb and JWC Real Estate.
