Well after our big hike at Kennesaw Mountain during our Smyrna Vinings Sunday Detour, we felt it was time for some good food. We had never been to the Trackside Grill in Kennesaw, but thought we’d give it a try. The restaurant was packed, which is always a good sign of things to come. The restaurant is cute and the outdoor dining area seems popular; people are probably afraid they won’t hear the train if they sit inside.
The menu seemed quite original and very tempting. Their motto is New South Flavor, Old South Charm. You can order anything from Chicken Pot Pie and Veal Meatloaf to a Pimento Cheese Sandwich.
Being a connoisseur (not sure if spelled that right, but if I claim to be one I guess I better figure out how to spell it) of Shrimp and Grits. So that’s what I ordered. My wife went for the B&B salad, my daughter for the Calamari (she’s determined to try Calamari at every restaurant) and my son went for the Crab Bisque and a Cesar salad. I know that’s not what most 5 and 8-year old kids would order, but it’s great to expand your taste-buds.
Before we get to the entrees, I guess I’d better mention the corn muffins. Simply divine. I’m assuming that as quickly as they were gobbled up, they must have passed the test. My son’s Crab Bisque came first and we all got a little sample. After that, he seemed a little irritated with us. Anyway, the bisque was excellent. Velvety smooth, with just enough spice to compliment but not scare off little kids.
My Shrimp and Grits was good. It came with Andouille sausage, caramelized onions, crushed tomatoes and a cream sauce. I’ve had better and I’ve had worse, so I’d give it a middle score. My wife had the B&B Salad, which is baby spinach, smoked bacon, blue cheese, dried cranberries, toasted pecans and maple vinaigrette. She had the grilled salmon added to it and was very pleased. The medley of flavors was tantalizing.
The only real disappointment was my daughter’s calamari. She’s tried a lot of calamari and when a 5 year old gives you the look, I knew something was up. Thinking that it may have just been her bad mood day, I thought I’d go ahead and try it. I was a little skeptical to start with though as the calamari was heavily battered, not what you’re typically looking for. After about three minutes of chewing, I finally gave up and threw in the towel. If this is their normal calamari, I think it’s time to take it off the menu. It was about like chewing on a rubber bouncy ball.
Noting our displeasure, they were quick to remedy the situation and we opted for the somewhat safer Mac-n-Cheese.
Despite the disappointment of the calamari, we were pleased with the Trackside Grill. Their menu offers a unique Southern flair that is sure to please and we look forward to visiting again. They serve lunch and dinner everyday as well as brunch on Sunday, so give them a try.
