Young Chefs Academy offers cooking classes to children in a safe environment that encourages discovery and creativity. While learning food preparation skills is the main ingredient at YCA, each class adds a heap of kitchen safety, a scoop of etiquette, a handful of table setting, a pinch of menu planning, and laughter to taste. Young Chefs Academy offers weekly classes, special events, birthday parties and mini-camps.
From the moment they enter the Academy, students are prepared to be the chefs in our kitchens. Once fitted with an apron, each child is led to wash his/her hands as we review the importance of cleanliness in food preparation. The children are then seated around work tables as we read the recipe for that class together.
This is an excellent opportunity to discuss with them the social context of the food being prepared, including engaging them about their own experiences. We encourage their natural curiosity by asking them questions throughout the process. To facilitate their ability to be hands-on, we use kid-sized cooking utensils that work well for small hands.
When children are welcomed into our kitchens, they develop additional life enrichment skills. Cooking reinforces and helps children to practice:
READING – comprehension and vocabulary when reviewing the recipes
MATH – measures, weights, equivalents, counting, dividing
SCIENCE – combining and activating ingredients, seeing what occurs when adding heat or cold
And, along the way, they also develop life-enriching skills:
Creativity and self-expression
Nutrition awareness and food exploration
Teamwork and group social skills
Meal planning and ideas
Time management
Promotion of family fun at mealtime
