Christmas is over, so what to do with the Christmas tree?

Recycle that Tree! ….Bring One For The Chipper!

Home Depot on Cumberland Parkway and Keep Smyrna Beautiful will again host the Smyrna Vinings area site for the Christmas tree recycling event on Saturday, January 5, 2019. Keep Smyrna Beautiful will offer citizens a free tree seedling for each tree dropped off while they last. Vegetable and flower seed packets will also be available. Volunteers will be on hand to direct traffic and to …help citizens unload their trees. Davey Tree Experts will chip the trees and deliver free mulch.

Bring One For The Chipper will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Home Depot parking lot on Cumberland Parkway.

How can you participate? If you would like to donate your tree, simply remove all the ornaments and the base and bring it to the Home Depot on Cumberland Parkway between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on January 5th. Home Depot asks that trees not be dropped off until the day of the event because of space limitations. Also, please do not bring wreathes and garland. The wire used to hold them together cannot be chipped.

To volunteer, contact Julie Barwig at Keep Smyrna Beautiful at jbarwig@smyrnaga.gov. For information on mulch delivery call Davey Tree Experts at 770-451-7911.

This is the 28th year for the Bring One For The Chipper event. Each year, Keep Georgia Beautiful works with private sponsors to organize the recycling event. These statewide sponsors included The Home Depot, The Davey Tree Expert Company, Georgia Forestry Commission and WXIA-TV. Numerous local sponsors and volunteers also make contributions and provide in-kind services across the state.

The Keep Georgia Beautiful Foundation spearheads this statewide event by bringing together news media, local governments, businesses and industries to educate Georgians on recycling and environmental conservation. The Chipper program involves hundreds of Georgia communities and thousands of volunteers.

Since its inception, the program has recycled an estimated 6 million Christmas trees. The mulch from these trees has been used for playgrounds, local government beautification projects, and individual yards. You can support the Chipper program by bringing your cut Christmas tree to a designated drop off site or volunteering with your local coordinator to collect trees.
