City of Smyrna Memorial Day Ceremony

The City of Smyrna will be holding the Memorial Day ceremony at the 20th Century Veterans Memorial on May 26, 2014 at 9:30 a.m.

The Smyrna ceremony is organized by members of the community and it is those members of the community who officiate. Join us on this day to honor and appreciate our commitment to peace through strength and sacrifice.

Seating will start after 8:00 a.m. and pre-ceremony/ceremony activities will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Smyrna Community Center (200 Village Green Circle, Smyrna, 30080).

The ceremony is sponsored by the City of Smyrna and coordinated by the Smyrna Veterans Committee, an organization composed of the City of Smyrna, The Veterans Memorial Association of Smyrna, and American Legion Post 160. The ceremony is a public event and all are invited to attend and participate in this memorial service to honor those who have sacrificed in defense of our nation.

The Smyrna Veterans Committee, the City of Smyrna, and American Legion Post 160 will kick-off the Memorial Day Ceremony at 9:30 am on Monday, May 26, 2014, at the 20th Century Veterans Memorial at 800 King Street between City Hall and the Library.

They will honor fallen veterans and help support local veterans and their families.

Guest speakers will be Chaplain Major Olga Westfall, a native of Ukraine currently assigned at VA Medical Center, Decatur, GA and Air Force Reserve at Dobbins, and Army Ranger SFC Tony Foster, a decorated hero having served two tours in Vietnam. Campbell High School JROTC will present the Colors. Breigha Young will sing the National Anthem and the Roswell New Horizons Band will provide music throughout the ceremony. There will be displays to tour behind the Veterans Memorial over to the Community Center.

This year, the Smyrna Veterans Committee and American Legion Post 160 will honor those from Cobb County who have died while on active duty this century, in a special insert in the program: “Cobb County – Honor the Fallen” – showing a picture of each service member who has fallen, branch of service, rank, date and age at time of death, and location.

Wreaths Laying Ceremony Sponsors are American Legion Post 160, Sons of the American Legion Squadron 160, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 160, City of Smyrna, Veterans Memorial Association, Cobb County Chapter of Gold Star Mothers.

Following the 2014 ceremony, there will be a barbecue cookout open to the public held at American Legion Post 160 at 160 Legion Drive starting at 12 noon. There will be pulled pork, turkey, and various sides to enjoy.
