Congratulations to the Whitefield Academy basketball team for winning the state championship on Saturday.
University of Georgia-bound Kenneth Gaines led Whitefield Academy to its third Class A boys championship with 24 points as the No. 2-ranked Whitefield Academy Wolfpack beat No. 7 Athens Christian 73-50 in the Class A championship game.
Whitefield finished the season with a 22-game winning streak and a 29-3 record overall. Coach Tyrone Johnson steered Whitefield Academy to championships in the 2002-03 and 2008-09 seasons.
Whitefield Academy also got 18 points from sophomore Eric Lockett, nine points each from Jordan Coar and Khalen Pinkett, as well as Lorenzo Carter finishing with six points and 11 rebounds.
