the-twentieth-century-veterans-memorialThe Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial was erected in dedication to the memory of those who served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces – Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard – during the twentieth century.  The Memorial honors the living, the dead, the wounded, the missing, and the families who supported those who gave part or all of their lives to our country, in war and in peace.  The Memorial also honors members of the Merchant Marine who served during times of war.

The Memorial is located within Market Village near the new Smyrna City Hall and Smyrna Library.  The Twentieth Century Veterans Memorial was erected in 2000 to pay tribute to veterans from Cobb County who served honorably in the U.S. military during the last century.

Brick pavers will help pave the walkway from the Smyrna Welcome Center to the Memorial.

Veterans and their families and loved ones can take part in the ongoing development of the Memorial by making contributions.  For each $50 contribution, supporters may designate a marble paver for a veteran from anywhere in the U.S. who served in any branch of service.  These 4×8 inch marble pavers, honoring only veterans, will become a permanent part of the Memorial.  For a $35 contribution, 4×8 inch brick pavers may be designated for any veteran, family member, friend or relative.

Court of Honor

A majestic, 60-foot flagpole on a long granite base marking the entry to the Memorial, the Court of Honor is further defined by six smaller flagpoles representing the six branches of military service and a raised stone platform for veteran ceremonies and civic events.

Garden Wall

The Garden Wall begins with a map of the world and reflecting pool.  Inscribed in the stone wall will be 10 zones corresponding to the 10 decades of the twentieth century.  Wars and battles are noted in atimeline etched in marble, and the wal is lined with majestic trees and stone benches for quiet reflection.

Memorial Grove

A solemn, contemplative area, this open space creates the sense of being in a large outdoor room, with a small arbor and granite garden walls inscribed with the names of the Cobb County men and women who died in service.
